This small testbed was started in January, 2001 in order to anticipate future problems with the
departmental wireless infrastructure, make some users aware of its possibilities and foresee an
implantation plan. It's currently over, but docs are left here because some
people still want the old instructions for the early 3Com cards.
- Sample 3Com 3CRWE747-E1 access point working correctly. Simple coverage checks performed
successfully. Roaming not yet tested.
- Lucent cards now work straight out of the box under Linux and
pcmcia-source 3.1.20 or above.
- 3Com cards (3CRWE737A-E1) work with minor contortions under Linux - see how to make them work with Linux 2.2 or early 2.4
kernels, or with Linux 2.4.19 and included
PCMCIA support
- 3Com cards work correctly under Windows95, although a certain laptop
refused to detect them (but it worked with Linux) (?).
- Early and newer PCMCIA 3Com cards are very different externally their
IDs differ in minor version only. Older Windows drivers get confused
sometimes with newer cards. Don't mix them.
